A bill passes through a legislative committee that would allow Missouri Utilities to take more factors into account when asking the Missouri Public Service Commission for a rate increase.
According to the Missouri News Network, the Missouri House Utilities Committee advanced a bill that would allow water, gas and electric utilities to seek rate increases based on estimated future expenses and for unfinished power plant construction.
Supporters of the bill say that while rates may go up, the payoff would be the improvements for the utility that would eventually even out the increase.
Opponents say the bill could lead to drastic rate hikes and would impact groups that already struggle paying utility bills such as veterans.
The bill will now move on to the full house for consideration.
