The number of Lakes Region residents reporting scam or attempted scam calls continue to rise.
According to a recent post from the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, they have received over 100 calls in the past year from residents saying that someone claiming to be from the sheriff's office stating that a warrant has been issued for their arrest and they can settle it if the person purchases gift cards or prepaid Visa/MasterCard cards from a local store.
The post goes on to say after the victim gets the cards, they are instructed to call the number back to give them the code.
As with other law enforcement agencies, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office does not call residents in this manner.
