National Labor Day DWI Mobilization Under Way

The annual National Labor Day DWI Mobilization is underway through September 7.

In a release announcing their participation in the annual event, the Harrison Police Department says the message is simple, drunk driving is illegal, drunk driving is deadly, and there is never a good reason to get behind the wheel impaired.

During this high-visibility enforcement campaign, motorists can expect to see an increased law enforcement presence on area roadways. The goal is to prevent crashes, save lives, and ensure everyone gets home safely.

The release talks about the cost of a DUI, which can be an average an average of $10,000 or more when attorney fees, court costs, fines, lost wages, increased insurance premiums, and other expenses are added together. But the financial cost pales in comparison to the human cost. Alcohol-related crashes have resulted in billions of dollars in economic losses nationwide and, more importantly, have devastated countless families and communities.

People arrested for driving under the influence could face jail time, thousands of dollars in expenses, increased insurance rates, and a criminal record.

Before celebrating during the Labor Day weekend or anytime, the release reminds people to designate a sober driver or use a rideshare service,  taxi or call a friend or family member if a ride is needed after drinking.
