Managing Stress During the Holidays

How to manage stress and anxiety this holiday season.

Sometimes the holidays aren’t so jolly and festive. Those that deal with depression and anxiety can dread the most wonderful time of year.

Counselor Pam Morris, Ed. S. LPC-S, stopped by Around the Table on Thursday to talk about how to cope with mental health issues this time of year.

“38% surveyed by the American Psychological Association said their anxiety and stress levels increase over the holidays,” Pam said. “This is very normal.”

As pressure increases to impress over the holidays, it is normal to feel more stressed.

“The trick is just recognizing that it is okay to feel this way,” she added.

Pam said it is important to know what triggers our anxiety including expectations when it comes to gift giving, attending large parties or functions and going holiday shopping.

“It may be important to re-prioritize what you do for the holidays, maybe set up a time to shop online instead of in the store, maybe realizing I only need to spend an hour at a family function,” she said.
