Lettuce Recall Continues, Expands

Taylor Fresh Foods and Taylor Farms have announced a recall of iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico as federal health officials investigate a large outbreak of cyclosporiasis. Nearly 7,000 confirmed or suspected illnesses are being reviewed in connection with the outbreak.

The recalled lettuce was distributed between June 29 and July 16 in 27 states. The companies said the action applies to the implicated iceberg lettuce and does not include Taylor Farms-branded salad kits.

Investigators linked shredded iceberg lettuce served at some Taco Bell restaurants with illnesses reported in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention previously advised customers in those states to avoid lettuce served at the affected restaurants.

Cyclosporiasis is caused by a microscopic parasite and commonly produces prolonged watery diarrhea. Other symptoms can include stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss and increased gas or bloating.

Taylor Farms said it stopped receiving lettuce from the implicated source and suspended distribution of iceberg lettuce from central Mexico. The company also said it is working to remove affected products from the supply chain.

Consumers who believe they may have eaten recalled lettuce should monitor for symptoms and contact a healthcare provider if significant or persistent illness develops. People should not eat a product that has been identified as part of the recall, even when it looks or smells normal.
