The malfunction of a treatment plant has led to a Lakes Area City to declare a Disaster Emergency Proclamation.
According to a Facebook post from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Little Rock District, they had been notified by the Arkansas Department of Energy on a failure of the Eureka Springs Wastewater Treatment Plant. That malfunction has led to the discharge over 10,000 gallons of untreated effluent daily into Leatherwood Creek, which leads to an area of Table Rock Lake near Holiday Island.
According to the post, Eureka Springs Officials are collecting samples from Leatherwood Creek to check for elevated E. coli levels.
The public is urged not to drink or swim in Leatherwood Creek downstream from the treatment plant.
