The person discovered to have stolen money from the Stone County Collector’s office after a state audit has now been formally charged.
Documents were submitted to Stone County Circuit Court on Monday charging Whitney Brown of Galena with a Class D Felony of Stealing. The probable cause affidavit says that a taxpayer had seen online that her 2022 taxes were delinquent but had paid them. This uncovered a pattern in which Brown would collect the payments from individuals and post them as paid but not turned in the money which amounted to over $13,000.
Brown is scheduled for a court appearance on November 18.
