Special Branson Board of Aldermen Meeting Turns into Discussion of Convention Center, Sports Complex

A special Branson Board of Aldermen meeting focused on the city’s seven-year financial forecast and capital plan shifted Thursday into a discussion about potentially combining two major projects: an expansion of the Branson Convention Center and development of a new sports complex.

City Finance Director Allison Ramsey presented information on the city’s long-range capital needs and potential ways to fund them.

As the presentation progressed, Alderman Alex Williams raised the possibility of evaluating the two proposed projects together rather than treating them solely as separate developments.

Earlier this year, the city began negotiations for property on Gretna Road for the proposed sports facility and surrounding development. The city had previously unveiled plans for the project. The deadline associated with the city’s option to purchase the property was recently extended by 60 days.

Williams made a motion directing city staff to compare the proposed Gretna Road sports complex with an alternative that would combine a sports facility with an expansion of the downtown convention center.

City Administrator Cathy Stepp said completing such a comparison could take several months and expressed concern about how that timeframe could affect the deadline for purchasing the Gretna Road property.

Williams responded that he did not believe studying both options should prevent the city from continuing to pursue the land purchase if officials ultimately decide to move forward with the Gretna Road project.

The rest of the board, Mayor Larry Milton, and members of the audience made comments during the discussion with the board eventually voting to research the possibilities.
